The Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism is the introduction of a person into the Catholic faith and the Church community, beginning their journey as a disciple of Jesus. Through the waters of Baptism the person enters into the life of God - Father, Son and Spirit.

At St Peter’s Parish, we live out our parish vision to be a missionary disciple, witnessing to the great commission of Jesus (Matthew 28: 19-20). Jesus said “Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And look, I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.”

The great commission begins with the imperative word: GO! We are called to go out and search the lost, the forsaken, those willing to become followers of Jesus. Disciples make disciples! The challenge for us all is to make disciples for Jesus. A disciple is a person who has had a transformational encounter with Jesus Christ to surrender and follow him! How best do we do this?

We at St Peter’s Parish require all those seeking Baptism to encounter Jesus in a real and tangible way through the Alpha Course, which is why we require at least 3-6 months notice prior to the baptism to take place. This is a series of interactive sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith. Each session looks at a different question and is designed to create conversation. There is no pressure, no follow up and no charge; just an open, informal, and honest space to explore and discuss life’s big questions together. Each Alpha session includes: great company, great food, an awesome video and scintillating conversation!

If you request to have yourself or your baby baptised, the first step is to enrol in an Alpha course. You can send an email to clayton@cam.org.au or call 9544 1516 or to telephone the office to make an appointment with a priest.
